Description

Asphaltum or Bitumen, frequently occurs at the surface or just below the surface of the earth. Bitumen can occur in a variety of different forms, ranging from tar sands to solid floating blocks spit out by the Dead Sea, but it is most commonly black or dark brown and viscous. Given its relative accessibility, bitumen has been a constant in human material cultures across the world from at least the neolithic period. While bitumen’s applications are diverse, including everything from agricultural to mortuary, some of the earliest evidence of human bitumen usage is for artistic purposes.
