Description

John William Hill was one of the leaders of the American Pre-Raphaelite movement, a group of New York artists formed in 1863 and devoted to the principles of English critic John Ruskin. Hill responded to Ruskin’s call to seek “truth” in the closely observed details of the natural world. In this watercolor, Hill’s descriptive precision is evident in the geological contours and in the churn of the cascading falls.
