Description

The life of Samuel Jones remains obscure. An inscription on the verso of this drawing notes that it was given to John Neagle by Thomas Birch, two Philadelphia artists, in 1827. That same year, two Shakespearean scenes by Jones were exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Beyond that, little information about the artist seems to survive. This drawing is thus significant as an early—and exceedingly rare—depiction of the landscape, already showing signs of settlement, in the Catskill Mountains of New York, the region that would inspire and become closely associated with subsequent generations of American landscape painters.
