Description
American landscape painter Jasper Francis Cropsey lived in London from 1856 to 1863 and traveled throughout England. He sketched this delicate line drawing at Walton-on-Thames, a village about fifteen miles north of the city. The structure faintly suggested in the background on the right is the estate known as Mount Felix, whose owner, an American banker, Cropsey visited in 1859 for, according to his journal, “a magnificent party.” As typical of the working methods of the Hudson River School landscapists, Cropsey made pencil studies from nature, sometimes adding dark washes or white gouache with brushes, to serve in the creation of larger oil paintings in the studio. This drawing is one of two closely related to his 1860 painting Walton-on-Thames (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston).
