Description
The son of the prominent American Pre-Raphaelite artist John William Hill, whose work is on view in the exhibition, John Henry Hill was also influenced by English critic John Ruskin. The carefully delineated bark in this drawing follows Ruskin’s principles for a near-scientific attention to detail. For Hill and other adherents, the faithful transcription of nature was closely connected to a reverence for the divine.
