Description
Little is known about the life of Chicago-born artist William Baptiste Baird, but he produced a large body of work focused primarily on farmyard animals, particularly roosters and hens. Baird trained in Paris and seems to have been more active abroad—exhibiting consistently at the Paris Salon and the Royal Academy in London—than in the United States. In this watercolor, Baird captured the feisty fowl with characteristically assured handling of the subject.
