Description
An inscription in the lower left corner links this drawing to Edwin Howland Blashfield’s involvement with the Hudson–Fulton Celebration of 1909, a two-weeks-long commemoration of both Henry Hudson’s 1609 navigation of the Hudson River and Robert Fulton’s 1807 commercial steamboat voyage from New York City to Albany. The drawing may have been preparatory to the poster commission Blashfield received for the event, but it differs significantly from the finished design, which features a clothed allegorical female figure of “progress” flanked by Columbus and Fulton.
