Pliny Fast Facts
Flax is a plant that grows from a seed under a single ploughing of sandy soil.
It is sown in the Spring and picked in the Summer. Pliny explains that Flax is easily grown in both size and method of cultivation, which cannot be attributed to any other plants. However, Flax requires quite a fair amount of water and will deplete the soil that it is grown in.
Pliny writes about flax being grown with the purpose of carrying the wind in sails by being made into sail-cloth. He says, "out of so small a seed springs a means of carrying the whole world to and fro ... "
As indicated Flax can be used to make resilient linens for sails, but also nets for hunting, fishing, and fowling. Fishing is the technique of catching aquatic animals and fowling is the shooting or trapping of birds.
