Title
Titian
In his later paintings, Venetian artist, Titian, often put the weave of his linen canvases to compositional use. Contrasts between smooth impasto and rough fabric created novel dissonances that invigorated his work.
The weave could serve representational functions as well. The canvas texture could reiterate the weave of depicted textiles, as in his late 'Danaë' painting. The coarse weave of the canvas could also roughen a layer of yellow ochre paint to convey the arid character of a hillside, as in the detail of his 'Diana and Castillo'.
