Worn by women at the turn of the century, overdresses like this one were designed to show off an underdress. This overdress is made of lightweight linen and combines several decorative elements. First, solid-satin-stitch embroidery forms a central plant motif on the front bodice. Similar embroidered designs decorate the back bodice, skirt front, waist, and cuffs. Lace inserts frame the embroidery, running the length of the side front and the button placket, as well as on the cuffs, shoulders, and waistband. Crochet-covered buttons provide center-back closure. Additional lace finishes the neckline. Finally, French knots run along the shoulder seams and down the skirt panels. The bodice is gathered at the waistline.
This dress has been altered. Much of the front and back skirt have been cut away, leaving a raw edge. The hem has also been removed. Inside the garment, the seams are machine-sewn and hand finished. Lapped seams attach the skirt panels.
