Northumberland lies at the confluence of the two branches of the Susquehanna River. In this view, the West Branch flows in from the left; to the right is the North Branch, divided by the heavily treed Packers Island. The barge depicted in the left foreground has reached the northern terminus of the Susquehanna Division Canal, which flows along the west bank of the Susquehanna River as far south as current-day Duncannon, at the mouth of the Juniata River.
